Principles of Design
Several principles of design may be applied to any media to make it appear more attractive. ie. similar design principles are applied to the creation of paintings, newsletters, photographs, video, animation or web pages. Therefore, it would be logical to introduce a course on multimedia with a discussion of these universal principles and an analysis of good layout design.Throughout this section print resources will be created applying the various design principles illustrated. This decision was made as print is a multimedia resource with which all students are accustomed and comfortable.
Macromedia Freehand MX-2004 is the software tool that will be used in this section since it allows the creation of original vector graphics and a variety of single or multi-page publications. A vector graphic is special in that it is created using shapes and math functions that allow it to be resized without losing resolution. You will see in the digital imaging section that Macromedia Fireworks is used to create raster or bitmap images. While raster images allow more special effects to be added to elements of an image they have the disadvantage that they are composed of pixels (picture elements) which make the image appear blurred should it be enlarged.
