Nouns

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or an idea.

There are six classes of nouns… 
Common Noun
- does not begin with a capital letter and names a specific person, place or thing

  • language
Proper Noun
- does begin with a capital letter and names a specific person, place or thing

  • Lake Ontario
  • Eric Lindros
  • Coca-Cola
  • Rembrandt
  • Flemish
Concrete Noun
- anything that can be seen, heard, touched, smelled or tasted

  • cashews
  • smoke
  • fern
  • trumpet
Abstract Noun
- something that cannot be directly seen, heard, touched, smelled or tasted

  • truth
  • justice
  • honour
  • peace
  • faith
Compound Nouns
- a noun made up of two or more words (may be written as one word two words, or hyphenated)

  • earthworm
  • great-uncle
  • ice hockey
  • Main Street
Collective Nouns
- names a group of people or things

  • Inuit
  • committee
  • family
  • society
  • class
  • team
